Stanford Professional Women of Los Angeles

Recap: 2018 Summer Fellowship Brunch

By Trisha Manaka MA ’10

The SPWLA Fellowship Brunch brought together members and donors to meet with SPWLA’s 2018 Fellowship recipient, Marisol Zarate, a senior majoring in Political Science and Urban Studies.

At the brunch, Marisol described the senior research project that she was working on while interning at Fostering Media Connections and The Right Way Foundation. Both organizations are based in Los Angeles and advocate for foster youth. Fostering Media Connections reports stories on foster youth and publishes them in the mainstream media. The Right Way Foundation provides services to foster youth so that they can become productive, independent citizens. As part of her research project, Marisol interviewed foster and incarcerated youth from these organizations during the summer. From this work, she also made recommendations to the Department of Child and Family Services for making improvements to the experiences that foster youth have in the foster care system.

It was inspiring to hear about the ways in which Marisol was making an impact outside of the Stanford community through her social justice work!
