On a lovely January afternoon, a group of Stanford alumni gathered in North Hollywood for a hands on posture workshop with Sharon Jakubecy Klehm to learn about the Alexander technique and how we can have healthy pain free posture at work. We reviewed slides of good and bad posture, and discussed painful patterns in postures we were all guilty of doing ourselves. With these ideas in mind, we got to work on having a long spine. Several participants had hands-on assessments in front of the whole room. With Sharon’s guidance, we were impressed with our seemingly instant improvement in the minutes that we did not try to force themselves into good posture, but merely having a wide chest and back and breathing properly. We all left the workshop with posture goals to work towards in our daily lives and better body awareness.
